Investigations

Businesses and municipalities are being victimized from both within and outside their organizations, requiring expert investigative research and strategies. Rome McGuigan, P.C. has a team of attorneys experienced in conducting investigations who have helped clients successfully obtain employee dismissals, recover money and property and obtain injunctive relief. Our investigative efforts have resulted in the arrest, conviction and incarceration of individuals who have misappropriated proprietary information, computer technology, industrial materials and other property. From electronic countermeasures to retrieval of computer data, we have a track record of resolving problems.

Our Investigation Team has over thirty years of experience and is led by Austin J. McGuigan, former Chief State's Attorney for the State of Connecticut, and Glenn E. Coe, former Chief Trial Attorney for the Chief State's Attorney. Working together with an established team of investigators positioned throughout the country, we research and develop information to resolve internal client issues, to identify potential criminal conduct and to provide trial strategy and management to prosecute and defend complex litigation.

In the corporate arena, where the wrongful appropriation of information and property is ever increasing, our Investigation Team helps companies protect their valuable assets from inappropriate takings by employees, ex-employees and competitors. The Investigation Team at Rome McGuigan, P.C. has adopted a proactive approach to uncover schemes to steal intellectual property and other information or to solicit your employees. Using industry-wide intelligence networks, we have successfully conducted investigations and developed internal security measures and countermeasures to prevent security breaches, theft of money and property and the misappropriation of proprietary information.

Short of court-ordered discovery, it is often difficult to develop evidence of wrongdoing. A focused and professional investigation can produce the information needed to prevent a loss, to confront a wrongdoer from a position of strength or to provide the basis for legal relief. Many of our most important cases have been resolved prior to engaging in costly and uncertain litigation. For example, a confidential settlement agreement is often the best way to resolve sensitive breaches of security.

As recent lawsuits demonstrate, a corporate client can be held legally responsible for the egregious conduct of its investigators. Our experience in managing complex investigations and our working relationships with investigators throughout the United States enables us to insulate the client from, and reduce the risk of, liability to third parties. At the same time, our hands-on approach allows us to control clients' costs while producing superior results.

Our investigative skill is enhanced by two other assets. First, we maintain a close working relationship with prosecutors and law enforcement agencies in Connecticut and throughout the country. Second, we utilize state-of-the-art technology to quickly retrieve critical information and store thousands of documents on CD ROMs. This enables us to immediately access and analyze the relevance and reliability of new information. Our technological capability also enables us to help clients retrieve data stored in computer systems which others have tried to delete or block.

For municipalities and other public entities, Rome McGuigan, P.C. has helped clients cope with internal and external corruption, including fraud, embezzlement, the misuse of office and the potential effects of legalized gambling. Clients include the City of Stamford, the City of Torrington, the City of New Haven and the Town of Wethersfield.

Upon completing our investigation, we analyze the information and devise customized strategies that are the most appropriate. Whether through the aggressive pursuit of litigation or the development of audit, follow-up or security procedures, the Rome McGuigan, P.C. Investigation Team provides solutions and results.
